Paleo Banana Fritters

It’s time to face the turkey and pie: holiday season is officially here.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love eating a big bowl of mashed and buttered potatoes with sausage and herb stuffing topping and finishing off the meal with a generous slice of pecan pie, but as good as that food is for the soul, it’s a little more unfriendly to my waistline.

I can’t imagine giving up the turkey drumstick at my family’s holiday party, but there are simple ways to make healthy swaps during the season. One solution is eating paleo. In the words of our author Becky Winkler, paleo is a diet “designed to generally mimic the diet our ancestors ate. The idea is eating what we evolved eating keeps us healthy and keeps our digestive system in good working order.”

When most people think of paleo, images of giant steaks and steamed veggies dance in their heads. While that’s all well and good, my tastes lean a little sweeter. Desserts can be made to fit the paleo diet with just a few simple substitutions. Best of all, you don’t have to sacrifice taste! I’ve rounded up a few recipes for familiar treats and some new favorites that will have you coming back for guilt-free seconds.

For the chocoholic: a Paleo Molten Lava Cake is sure to satiate your sweet tooth. With warm chocolate slowly oozing out of a toothsome chocolate cake, it’s almost hard to believe this is a healthy dessert substitute!

For the traditionalist: Pecan Pie is a staple winter dessert, but it can be high in calories and carbs. This Clean Eating version is not only paleo, but is also refined sugar free and conforms to gluten-free requirements.

For the pumpkin addict: Pumpkin season is in full swing, so why not try a healthier incarnation of everyone’s favorite gourd? These Grain-Free Pumpkin Snickerdoodles are sure to hit the spot.

For the kids: These Meltaway Lemon Balls are just as fun to roll into shape as they are to eat. The bite-sized treats are delicious and healthy enough that you don’t have to stop at one!

For the world traveler: Becky’s Malagary Banana Fritters are adapted from a traditional Madagascar recipe. Gooey fried bananas with real vanilla, served warm and topped with honey and toasted sesame seeds? Don’t mind if I do.
